A funeral or homecoming ceremony is a special ritual or gathering held when someone dies. It gives relatives and friends a chance to express their love for the person who has died and their sadness at his or her death. After a funeral, a dead person’s body is usually buried underground or cremated. There are two main purposes for a funeral:to take care of the body and the spirit, or soul, of the person who has died, and to look after the needs of the living people left behind.
In every culture around the world, funerals and special rituals are carried our when someone dies. In some religions, people believe that after death a new life begins in heaven, or close to God. Other religions teach about reincarnation–the belief that a dead person’s spirit starts a new life within another living being. Some people believe that death is simply the end of life.
